For portrait photographers, the holidays are always a busy time of year, for me this time of year can be just plain chaotic. Between October 8th and January 16th, not only are all the holidays sandwiched in among football games, Open Houses, school projects, and portrait and event shoots – but this is when all six of our family birthdays fall. Yet, every year it’s my absolute favorite time.
I adore Halloween, I always have. The costumes, candy, trick or treating, crafts, and holiday spirit carry me on waves of sugar-soaked nostalgia. Halloween is my mother’s birthday and she always enjoyed us dressing up. We would make our costumes from whatever scraps we had lying around our house – and tons of creativity. We created elaborate stories for the characters we made up to dress as on Halloween, and sometimes if I squint my eyes and try to remember very, very far back – there even seems to have been a chilly autumn night or two in South Florida.
Halloweens at my house are no different now (although I’ll admit we buy most of our costumes – I have to outsource some things lol). The hurried excitement builds up exponentially until Halloween night. We start thinking about what characters we are planning to be the next Halloween on November 1st (I’m almost ashamed to admit what with it being the first week of November – but I have three of my four children’s costumes for next year already hanging in the closet!). When the children were smaller we had themes, Star Wars, Peter Pan, Super Heroes, and my favorite was last year’s Wizard of Oz. I had the perfect ‘set’ – from my barrel chested Tin Man (my oldest Vicente) right down to my braided brunette Dorothy (my darling Audrey). Liam was the Cowardly Lion with a ferocious growl and Nikolai had just turned a year old and was the sweetest little Scarecrow. I knew that last year would probably be our last ‘themed’ Halloween.
Even though we didn’t have a theme this year and all the children picked their own costumes (with the exception of Niko) I would say it was a Middle Earth/Hogwarts extravaganza lol. Vicente read all the Harry Potter books last year in first grade, and with his dark hair and roguish grin – he couldn’t wait to be Hogwarts’ favorite student. Liam has always had an affinity for archery (he dressed as Peter Pan one year, and to this day still wears parts of the costume!), and when he watched The Lord of the Rings movies this year with us – he was drawn to Legolas’ character. Let me tell you – that was a tough costume to find lol! My dark haired little guy completed his outfit with an official Legolas blonde wig (which he wore with such solemnity!) and the leaf of Lothlorien pin. Audrey is feisty and very temperamental, much like Merida, her favorite princess. She was overjoyed to wear the tangle of red curls on her head and chase around her brothers with her bow and arrow. Nikolai, our youngest, well he didn’t have much of a choice – but I think he enjoyed being Harry Potter’s trusted owl Hedwig.
We had a wonderful (very nerdy) Halloween, and I hope you did too!
And yes – because I know you’ll ask – I did align my oldest son to catch the waning sunlight so that his wand seems to be evoking a Patronus charm lol!

I often meet young couples in the course of my work. Engagement shoots are some of my favorites to do, I love the energy, affection and creativity that go into them. Nothing is better then working closely with a future bride to achieve her ideal session. Often texts and calls from my couples will go on for months prior to the shoot while we plan every minute detail. One of my most recent engagement sessions was so fun, and not just because the soon to be Mrs. Jorva was perky and playful with imagination to spare – the love between Annia and her fiancé Alex was truly palpable during their sitting, and I’m so pleased to share a sneak peek with you!

After having four children in five and a half years, I was ready to get my body back into shape. Having never been in a gym, I was petrified on how I would go about this metamorphosis. As a child and teen I had always been active, played tennis, softball, danced, and swam, but I was a complete novice when it came to working out. In May of 2012, when my youngest was just five months old I began attending a Crossfit. I fell in love. Crossfit was fun, challenging and had everything I was looking for to stay motivated on my fitness journey. Since those early days, I’ve toured a few different Crossfit gyms (or boxes as they’re called), and recently had the pleasure of doing a shoot at a local box. South Dade Crossfit is one of the finest crossfits I’ve ever seen. Their coaches are elite athletes who not only know how to do the exercises, but break down each exercise into easy steps, while encouraging you to give your all. This shoot was definitely one of my favorites, and I cannot wait to go back for another!

I think photography appeals to a certain breed of people. When I say appeals what I truly mean is the people who it latches onto, sticks like a briar to a shoelace. Photography released within me an almost addictive urge to capture memories, document daily life and minutiae that most other people wouldn’t think twice about.
To others like me out there, keepers of journals, ticket stubs and birthday cards – photography is a solution to the answer, “How do I remember all the beauty that I’ve seen?”
My husband has at times teased and called me a pack rat (while looking at me quizzically when I insist on keeping at least a hundred birthday cards from over my life). I’ll admit – I like to hold onto things. I like to remind myself of memories, mostly good, but sometimes sad. I like the raw emotion of life, I like to live it and to capture it.
Today’s society is more akin to my sensibilities than my husband’s. With the onset of camera phones, affordable digital cameras, and the sheer infinite skyrocketing in popularity of photosharing apps and sites such as facebook, instagram, flickr, we’ve become an even more visual world. Often I worry that Huxley’s prediction of a society controlled by their love of the very technology that limits their capacity for thought has come and gone (perhaps with the advent of the iPhone?). We capture so much on these devices that we have to tell ourselves to stop and just enjoy the moment.
As a photographer I cannot very well say, “Just drop that camera! Enjoy the actual event.” I think pictures have a place in our lives. I’ve been a photo fanatic since I first held a camera in my hands. I took rolls of film in elementary school, and I encourage my children to do the same. Seeing life behind the lens gives you a different perspective on not just your subject – but yourself. As integral as I think pictures and documentation of our lives are, as enthusiastically as I love photography as an art and a way to express myself – I’m not thrilled with the way the craft is going.
Many people might be insulted by my use of the term ‘craft.’ To those of you out there who are horrified by my terminology because it brings up images of workers, rough jobs and yes – skills, I am not apologizing. Photography is an art, yes. But if you’re also making a living as a portrait or event photographer you know your art also comes with a set of proficiencies, and an education.
As I mentioned before the plethora of tools available to the most novice photographer (cheaper and cheaper DSLRs, image editing software and sharing sites) have all at once raised photography to a blinding fame and plummeted the use of any sort of technique.
It’s the old adage our teachers tried to hammer into us, quality not quantity. While the obsessive, (perhaps slightly compulsive) side to my personality demands I take a photo of that delicious five star meal I’m having, the actual photographer shakes her head a bit and insists that no matter what I photograph it should have some semblance of a quality shot. Sometimes the former wins, I’ll admit it. Sometimes you just want to post that blurry photo of your friend who lives 3,000 miles away that you only got to see once this year. And that’s fine – but that photo has no technique, it was all emotion without narrative.
There is a craft to photography, a measure of skill involved with taking consistently good photos. Photos that not only are crisp and clear and give us idea of the moment, but transport us for that blink of an eye into the excitement, the hilarity and the joy of life. Photography is more than the tools you use, it’s the heart and skill set you put into it. Some of that is innate, some of it comes with time and training, but it can’t be picked up in a polished box at Best Buy.

One of the first photos I ever took when I transitioned to a 35mm camera in 5th grade. My younger brother Robert, my favorite test subject.

For Manny’s 60th birthday the Gutierrez sisters decided to surprise their dad by throwing him a huge party. The party didn’t stop until well after midnight and everybody had a blast! From the delicious cupcakes to dancing to the pop up photobooth – it was a terrific night and I was so pleased to have photographed this event!

Jake and Zack are such lively, colorful little boys that a fun beach session was perfect for their birthday photos! We spent a long time running around in the sand, exploring lifeguard huts and splashing in the ocean – a wonderful session if you ask me.

Christine is one of the sweetest women you’ll ever come in contact with. She has a serene beauty that is more than skin deep. She has always been a lovely friend and I’ve watched her grow into a loving mother and now wife.
I was awestruck in 2010, when she asked me to shoot her small intimate wedding, it was the second wedding under my belt and I was thrilled when she was happy with her photographs.
